The second term is not the advertised price
Promotional monthly rates apply to an initial term. After that term ends, the renewal rate applies. In this sample the published renewal rate is between 1.67× and 2.23× the promotional rate, so a first-year comparison can misprice everything that follows.

| PLAN | PROMOTIONAL MONTHLY | RENEWAL MONTHLY | RENEWAL VS PROMOTIONAL | ONE YEAR AT PROMOTIONAL | ONE YEAR AT RENEWAL |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| KVM 1 4 GB / 1 vCPU | $6.49 | $11.99 | 1.85× | $77.88 | $143.88 |
| KVM 2 8 GB / 2 vCPU | $8.99 | $14.99 | 1.67× | $107.88 | $179.88 |
| KVM 4 16 GB / 4 vCPU | $12.99 | $28.99 | 2.23× | $155.88 | $347.88 |
| KVM 8 32 GB / 8 vCPU | $25.99 | $49.99 | 1.92× | $311.88 | $599.88 |
Worked example: KVM 1
The published initial term is 24 months at $6.49 per month, so the prepaid charge is $155.76. It then renews at $11.99 per month.
Over a 36-month horizon that means $443.52 in cash — the initial term plus one renewal block — against $299.64 allocated to the 36 months actually used. The renewal block pays for months 25–48, so $143.88 of the cash sits beyond the horizon.
How to compare on renewal, not on promotion
- Use the renewal rate as the baseline. It is the rate that applies for the majority of a multi-year horizon. Comparing promotional rates across providers compares the shortest, least representative part of the bill.
- Multiply the renewal rate by the months you plan to keep the server. In this sample KVM 1 renews at $11.99 per month and KVM 2 at $14.99, which is the smallest increase in the group (1.67×).
- Check the term length, not just the rate. A promotional rate is only as good as the term it covers. This sample verifies that term for KVM 1 only.
Monthly-billed providers have no renewal step
DigitalOcean, Akamai / Linode and Vultr publish a single monthly rate in this snapshot — there is no promotional-to-renewal step to model. That is not a guarantee: their published monthly price is variable, and the estimates on the comparison table assume it stays unchanged across the horizon. A renewal step and a variable price are different risks, and neither is visible in a single month of billing.
Scope and limits
Renewal rates are published snapshot values and can change. Only KVM 1’s initial term was verified, in an anonymous cart on September 15, 2026; the initial terms of the other prepaid plans are unverified, so their total cost is withheld rather than estimated. These yearly and multi-year figures are arithmetic built on the published monthly rate; the source pages state no tax boundary, so they are untaxed arithmetic and not pre-tax quotes. Add-ons and refund policy are excluded. See Methodology & disclosures.
What people on these plans say in their own words
Reproduced verbatim and unedited, each with its discussion title, link and date. These are experience reports from people who pay for such plans, not official provider wording and not this page's conclusion. Where a quote and the table above disagree, the published snapshot states the rate and the quote stays as one person's experience. The providers named in these quotes are not the provider in the table above.
How these are counted: one sample is one discussion thread, not one person. Several people replying inside the same thread count once. The four quotes come from three threads: quotes 1 and 4 come from one thread about holiday VPS deals, quote 2 from a thread about one-dollar VPS plans, quote 3 from a thread about a provider winding down a network.
Reported in more than one thread: one thing — the worry or the experience that the price jumps at renewal. Quote 1 (thread one) reports one provider nearly doubling the price of the same specification after years, quote 2 (thread two) asks whether renewal means paying double or more, quote 3 (thread three) reports a price that doubled and promotions that stopped working.
Reported in one thread only, so not a pattern: quote 4, the case of a plan that renewed at the same price for years. It is one thread, and it does not cancel out the three above.
1 · A renewal that nearly doubled · renewal
Do these prices persist on renewal? Or is it just an intro offer where the price jumps up after the initial contract term expires? (not that I'm bitter about OVH nearly doubling my price for the same-spec VM after being with them for years, and this RackNerd offer is tantalizingly about ⅓ the cost)

Where this gets stuck: the renewal number is a personal experience, not a published rate you can check. Way around it: get the renewal rate in writing for your exact plan before the first term ends, not from the advertisement.
2 · The renewal policy is nowhere on the page · renewal
Hello, I haven't seen the renewal policies anywhere. The prices are really good, but what happens in the end? When we renew, will we pay double or higher prices?
$1 VPS – 1 USD VPS Per Month (Updated July 2026) · 11 May 2025
Where this gets stuck: if the renewal rate is not published, the promotional price cannot be extended into year two. Way around it: treat the missing renewal rate as unknown and budget the second year at the renewal rate of a plan that does publish one, rather than at the promotional rate.
3 · Doubled, and the promotions stopped · renewal
Is this why they no longer provide promotions like before? I liked how Racknerd but now, their service price doubled up and their promotions no longer works :/ Sad story
Multacom’s China-Focused Network Appears To Be Going Away · 14 June 2026
Where this gets stuck: a price change and a promotion change arrive together, so a renewal quote and a new-customer quote are not comparable. Way around it: compare renewal against renewal, never renewal against a first-term promotion.
4 · Renewed at the same price for years · renewal
They renew at those prices. If you have any doubts, I recommend opening a pre-sales ticket to clarify, but FYI I rented a VM a couple years ago and have been paying the same price ever since.

Where this gets stuck: "renews at the same price" is one person's history with one provider on one plan. Way around it: use it as the question to ask support — does this exact plan renew at this rate — instead of as the answer.
