What this check covers

This comparison asks what the checked official pages say happens to data when a VPS contract ends. It does not test a real cancellation, restore, account closure, or support response. A backup-retention statement also does not establish that every disk or every backup type is covered.

These are page statements, not observed deletion times. Each row keeps its source scope attached; the Storage Space row does not describe all netcup VPS disks.

Why the retention window changes the cancellation plan

A stated archive window is useful only if you know which data enters it and when its clock starts. The OVHcloud page anchors its window to the effective cancellation date and names the system disk as the automatic-backup scope. That gives a buyer a specific checkpoint, but it does not turn another disk into a recoverable copy.

For IONOS, the checked help entry explains the route used to delete a VPS but does not publish a later recovery window. For netcup, the guide connects Storage Space to the vServer contract and says it is deleted with that server; it does not promise extra days after cancellation. An unstated period must stay unknown in a comparison. It cannot safely be treated as either instant deletion or a guaranteed grace period.

This distinction matters before you schedule a move. “Cancellation requested,” “contract end,” and “data no longer available” can be separate events. Only the first two may be visible in an account panel, and the checked pages do not give a complete event timeline for every product. If you need an exact deadline, obtain it for the selected plan in writing before you start cancellation.

Prepare a low cost VPS before cancelling it

Inventory the system disk, attached block disks, network storage, databases, uploads, configuration files, and any license or key material. Do not assume a provider's VPS backup covers every storage location.
Identify the copy you control outside the service being cancelled. A snapshot or mounted volume attached to the same contract may share its deletion boundary.
Export the files and databases, then restore them into a separate environment you control. Check that the site loads and that the important records are present; a completed download alone does not verify a usable copy.
Keep the old server active until the replacement works and the required records have been checked. This is a migration safeguard, not a claim about any provider's cancellation grace period.
Before submitting cancellation, save the selected product, location, effective end date, and any written retention answer. If the page is silent, ask support rather than inventing a deadline.
