low cost VPS server: can I send email directly?

If your application must open outbound TCP port 25, check the exact VPS product before buying: OVHcloud and IONOS describe a support release path, while netcup documents a rule the customer can remove in its control panel; OVHcloud Local Zone VPS cannot connect to SMTP servers. [A] The port 25 and port 587 details are from the same FAQ. [A] These are published rules, not a delivery test.

The buying question

“Can this VPS send mail?” is too broad to decide from a plan card. The check here is narrower: what do the three providers publish about outbound port 25, and what action do they document when it is blocked? [A] [B] [C] Port 25 is used here as the exact requirement named in those provider pages. This page does not report a purchased server, an SMTP connection, or successful delivery.

What each provider publishes

Provider and checked scopeDefault port 25 stateDocumented pathLimit to keep with the row
OVHcloud VPS [A]Blocked by defaultTry outbound port 587 with STARTTLS, or contact support to request a release.A VPS in a Local Zone cannot reach SMTP servers; the FAQ says this cannot be unlocked. [A]
IONOS servers managed in Cloud Panel [B]Blocked by defaultSet a fixed FQDN, reverse DNS/PTR and an SPF record, then contact customer service by phone. The help page says the block is controlled in the provider network; changing the Cloud Panel firewall is not the release step. [B]
netcup Generation 12 or later vServers using the SCP firewall [C]The default policy includes a blockAfter firewall activation, remove the outbound mail rule in the Server Control Panel if a mail server is intended. The cited article scopes the firewall to Generation 12 onward and says older existing VMs need activation. It does not document the policy of every other product generation. [C]

Rows paraphrase each provider's own page. A step documented by one company is not treated as a rule for another.

Choose the row by the control you can change

The useful difference is the release path, not a blanket yes-or-no label. The checked OVHcloud and IONOS pages direct customers to provider support for a port 25 release. [A] [B] IONOS specifically identifies a provider-network control; the OVHcloud FAQ does not identify the blocking layer. netcup describes a removable rule in its upstream firewall panel. [C] That means opening port 25 in a VPS's own Linux firewall would not, by itself, satisfy any provider-side release condition documented here. This is a reading of the three instructions, not a connectivity test.

For OVHcloud, decide the location first: a Local Zone is a hard stop for SMTP in the cited FAQ, including the alternative submission ports. [A] For an eligible non-Local-Zone VPS, the page points to port 587 or a support request. [A] For IONOS, complete the hostname, reverse lookup and sender-policy prerequisites before calling. [B] For netcup, check the product generation, confirm the SCP firewall is active, and inspect the assigned policy before removing the mail rule. [C] The table keeps these paths separate because copying a release step across providers can leave the actual block untouched.

If the application's mail client supports authenticated submission through an external relay, compare that setup as a separate option with the application's requirements and the relay's own terms. The sources on this page do not establish that a given application supports a relay, that another SMTP port is open on every product, or that any message will reach an inbox. Keep those items unconfirmed until the exact service and configuration have been checked.

Before ordering: a short verification sequence

  1. Write down the application’s required outbound destination port; do not assume “mail support” means port 25 is available.
  2. Match the provider row to the product family, location and firewall generation shown in the source.
  3. Record the published unblock route and every stated prerequisite before comparing plan prices.
  4. After delivery, test the required connection from the actual server and keep the command output. No such test was run for this page.

A listing that is cheaper at signup can still require a support request, DNS preparation or a panel rule change before it fits a mail-dependent application. This comparison does not attach a cost or a duration to that work: none of the checked pages gives one for this task. Treat the documented prerequisite as a purchase check, and leave the operational result blank until it is tested on the selected server.

Question and answer

Can I send email from a low cost VPS if port 25 is blocked?

Possibly, depending on the product and the application's sending method. The checked OVHcloud and IONOS pages describe provider release steps, with OVHcloud Local Zones excluded; the netcup page describes a removable default firewall rule for the stated product generation. [A] [B] [C] Check the matching row and verify the required connection on the server you order.
